Aston Manor 1st Team
Backbone of the Penn innings
A View From The Captain
"Following a mixed season in Division Two of the Birmingham League, the 1st XI are looking to mount a sustained challenge for promotion this year. Following the promising performances of youngsters Chris Whittock, Shozab Haider, Nabeel Asghar and Deepak Chhabra, the team is looking in the best shape for a while with some exciting new additions. The committee have worked hard behind the scenes in the wake of new legislation making the recruitment of new players ever more difficult, and we are delighted to have added Mo Nawaz, a top order batsman and leg-spinner, Arfan Khan an opening bowler from Premier League Kidderminster CC, Darren Baker a top order batsman from Marston Green CC and Ryan Van Niekerk, an exciting all round cricketer from Western Province in South Africa has joined up with us for the summer. The team is now taking shape, and with a couple more potential additions, to join up with stalwarts of the 1st XI Neal Prichard, Peter Evans and Andy Forman, it is set up to be an exciting season at Church Road.I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the great efforts of the Cricket Committee throughout the close season, and also to the continued support the General Committee has provided to take this club forward. The ground is in great shape, the best it has looked in years thanks to hard work from head groundsman Phil Shaw and his team. A big thanks must also go again to Tempus, our main sponsors, and Allan at the Tennis Courts Pub for their generous and greatly appreciated support.
Here's to a great summer's cricket, and look forward to our band of loyal spectators boisterous support!"

1st XI Manor secured their second win of the season with a comprehensive victory at Church Road against newly promoted Shropshire side Quatt. The hosts started solidly with the bat, with useful contributions from Nabeel Asghar (37), Aafan Janjua (33), Aurell Kirnon (28), Andrew Forman (27) and Peter Evans (20). Despite all of them looking in good touch, none were able to go on and play the major significant innings the team required. Poor shot selection was the underlying problem and it was left to a very sensible partnership between the experienced duo of Arfan Khan (25no) and Michael Bromhall (11no) to ensure that Manor reached a competitive total of 207-8 from their 50 overs. Any hope the visitors had of reaching their target was blown away by some tremendous seam bowling from Arfan Khan (3-33) and Aurell Kirnon (2-27) together with a welcome return to form from young spinner Nabeel Asghar (3-20). Quatt found themselves in disarray at 68-8 with the game effectively over, but Manor failed to keep up their early intensity and the visitors were able to recover to 131 all out. Julius Benjamin (1-22) and Armadeep Sonkar (1-27) were the other wicket takers for Manor, who will nevertheless need to step up their game when table topping Streetly visit Church Road next Saturday. |

Congratulations go to Brinder Phagura who has been awarded the very prestigious Alec Hastilow Trophy by the Midlands Club Cricket Conference. The Midlands Club Cricket Conference was very impressed by the outstanding season he has had with Aston Manor CC and thought that to award him this award was a fitting tribute to mark his excellent season. |
