Aston Manor 2nd Team
A more energic Rimmer!
A View From The Captain
"Much like the 1st XI the 2nd XI has also lost several key players from last season, mainly due to work commitments but also as a result of players seeking new challenges. We have however been lucky in signing a quality 2nd team all rounder in Shahid Qureshi who has joined from Civil Service, and we are also hoping to sign another very promising 18 year old all rounder to bolster the side. The main aim for the season though, as it was last year, is to continue to develop the young talent already within the club. Last season a considerable number of players aged 17 and below played 2nd XI cricket on merit, and the hope is that the trend will continue this season. There are already three young players who have established themselves in the side in Shaun Carroll, Nabeel Asghar and Arun Toora, and exams permitting hopefully this number will increase as the new season progresses.
Add in the virtual ever-presents from the previous few seasons Steve Evans, Abdul 'Rimmer' Rahim, Adam Rana and Steve Knowles and things again look promising. At the very least the 2nd XI should be able to match last seasons top half finish, but if the issue of inconsistency can be addressed then maybe sights can be set a little bit higher.
Finally I would like to echo Pete Evans thanks to Dave Betty (groundsman) who has continued to do an excellent job throughout the winter to ensure that the ground looks better than ever."

The Sunday league season has drawn to a close with a must win game for the seconds, win stay up lose be relegated. The right result was reached for the Manor, posting a total of 200 for 5 thanks to an unbeaten 71 from test match Turner and 60 from Vinay Thakur, with 25 from Waqar Ali and 15 not out from Steve Knowles A close finish was reached with Nether Whitacre reaching 182 for 6 at the close, with Owais taking 3 wickets for 22 runs. Most thanks for this result must go to Dennis Palmer, Paul Brown and Trents father who stepped in when we didnt have the transport to get to the match at Whitacre, and would have had to give up the points and been relegated. During the season due to the weather only 9 matches were completed. It is imperative that these Sunday league fixtures are maintained, which are giving our youth players league experience. During this season we had a total of 13 youth players playing in the second XI, and this was to either bat or bowl not just to make up the numbers, and they all performed magnificently. Thanks must go to Keith who did the vast majority of the work in getting the teams together, and Andy for fronting up the first XI. I have enjoyed taking these players out onto the field this season albeit not a position I particularly wanted, and I will most definitely NOT be captaining the side next season, but somebody MUST take up the baton and keep it going for the sake of the superb youths we have at the club, and we do not want them to have to go looking for league cricket elsewhere. Signing off for the last time as skipper, Geoff (Brucie, Wing Commander, G man) Knowles |
